An Extraordinary Trusteeship Retreat.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

With La Jolla and Torrey Pines as our playground, we have planned the following retreat activities:    

FRIDAY – April 28 

3:00 pm – Check in 

Check in and drop off your bags at the Lodge beginning at 3:00 pm. Official room check in is at 4:00 pm.

3:30 – 5:00 pm – Salk Institute – hosted 

For those who can join the retreat on Friday, you will be shuttled to the architecturally iconic Salk Institute for Biological Studies for a tour of this preeminent institute, an institution that focuses on the foundations of life and new realities in neuroscience, genetics, immunology. San Diego Trusteeship member, Nobel Laureate and Salk Institute President, Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Blackburn will talk about her Nobel Prize winning work on telomeres and the enzyme telomerase and their impact on the aging process.


5:00 – 6:00 pm – Late Friday check-ins at The Lodge at Torrey Pines

Rest/free time to explore The Lodge and its beautiful grounds 


6:30- 8:45 pm – Artisan Table Dinner -$135

Enjoy cocktails and dinner at our private dining room at The Lodge ~ “The Artisan Table”, a unique and intimate farm-to-table dining experience with wine pairings while overlooking the ocean. Member Grace Cherashore will talk briefly about the Arts and Crafts/Greene and Greene movement and their influence on The Lodge’s architecture.
SATURDAY – April 29 


Friday evening hotel guests and San Diego locals:  
Breakfast & Lodge fun
Breakfast is no host at either A.R. Valentien OR The Grill that overlooks the storied Torrey Pines golf course. 

Other early morning options include:

  • 8:00 am Guided Torrey Pines Reserve walk/talk/hike(plateau overlooking the ocean; limited to 12 members) – $10
  • Golf at legendary Torrey Pines Golf Course. Golf tee-times are on a first come first serve basis and we suggest you call ASAP to get a booking: 858-777-6610. Golf rates: North Course $177; South Course $303. 
  • Enjoy the Lodge’s Spa as our group has a 10% discount on all spa treatments. Ashley, the Spa Assistant Manager, can help you book your spa appointment, just let her know you’re with The Trusteeship in order to receive your discount. asalberg@lodgetorreypines.com.

12:15 pm

Climb aboard our private shuttle for our luncheon at Birch Aquarium!

12:30 – 2:30 pm

Lunch at Birch Aquarium followed by a Behind the Scenes Tour – $50

Over lunch, Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO) Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences and Director of SIO, Dr. Margaret Leinen, will acquaint us with the cutting-edge, globally recognized work being done by the scientists at Scripps.

Birch Aquarium is known as the public exploration center for Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Enjoy a behind the scenes tour of this beloved oceanographic museum. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Birch Aquarium features more than 60 habitats of fishes and invertebrates, including the crowd-pleasing baby seahorses! 

2:40 – 4:00 pm

Human Longevity, Inc – hosted

After a brief shuttle ride, you will arrive at Human Longevity, Inc (HLI) for a tour and talk by Dr. Craig Venter – biotechnologist, biochemist, geneticist and entrepreneur, known as one of the first to sequence the human genome and the first to transfect a cell with a synthetic genome. Hear Dr. Venter’s take on the subject of longevity.

4:10 – 4:45 pm 

Scripps Institute of Oceanography Pier – hosted

On our way back to The Lodge, we will stop for a short guided walk/talk down SIO’s Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, known as one of the world’s biggest research piers.

6:00 pm 

Cocktails, Dinner & Entertainment – $100

Members will be transported to the beautiful home of Gayle Tauber for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres; a brief overview “From A Police Chief’s Perspective” by member, San Diego Police Chief, Shelley Zimmerman; interactive self-defense exercises, and a canine officer demonstration.

Following, enjoy dinner and after dinner entertainment featuring one of our very own members! This promises to be an evening of mixing and mingling, learning, engaging, and musical delight!


9:15 pm

Shuttle return to The Lodge. 
SUNDAY – APRIL 30

Breakfast is no host at either A.R. Valentien OR The Grill that overlooks the storied Torrey Pines golf course.

Retreat concludes.  Enjoy The Lodge or La Jolla on your own.
