Trusteeship members were given an inside view of two exhibits from the Getty Foundation’s “Pacific Standard Time” program in January 2012. At the A+D Museum, Deborah Sussman (who worked closely with Charles and Ray Eames early in her career) led members through Eames Words, which focused on how the Eameses viewed “the uncommon beauty of common things” such as oranges, skateboard and balls of twine. At LACMA, the evening continued with a tour of California Design: Living in a Modern Way, the first major study of California mid-century modern design. Ming Fung, the architect of this showcase, provided a lively, informative narrative as she explained the four-part (Shaping, Making, Living, Selling) structure of the exhibit. The evening ended in the bustling vibe and outdoor setting of Ray’s at LACMA – a fabulous meal to top off a wonderful event.
