At UCLA, scientists are working on “miracles in the making,” at the Eli and Edythe Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research. In May 2012, Trusteeship members were the guests of UCLA through the generosity of member Judith Gasson, Director of UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. The event began with a tour of the Broad Center – more than 26,000 square feet of state-of-the-art laboratories and offices, where doctors and staff spoke about their work in stem cell research. The evening continued with a lovely dinner in the Faculty Center, followed by a panel discussion featuring Dr. Owen Witte, UCLA Broad Stem Cell Research Center Director, Center Co-Director Gay Crooks and Associate Professor Hanna Mikkola. What an inspiring, optimistic glimpse into the mind-boggling (to most of us) world of the future of medicine.
