The Trusteeship

April 2024

Hello!

Happy April to you all.

These past few weeks have been very exciting for us. The Trusteeship (IWF Southern California) had the pleasure of hosting two exceptional programs. These programs were so significant that they were offered as part of the International Women’s Forum’s Passport program.

The first one, A Peak Behind the Nobel Prize Curtain:

This unique program featured three of our Nobel Prize Awardee forum members: current members Dr. Frances Arnold (Chemistry 2018), Dr. Andrea Ghez (Physics 2020), and former member Dr. Elizabeth H. Blackburn (Physiology 2009). (How fortunate are we to have three members with that distinction?) We learned about their experiences and reflections as we were guided through their unique journeys. It was moderated by award-winning writer, television/radio personality, and Trusteeship/IWF member Patt Morrison.

We were joined by 15 different Forums from 8 states and 5 countries: the USA, Canada, The Bahamas, Finland, and Turkey.

A special thank you to Gayle Tauber for making this all happen.

The second one, The YouTube Effect:

In a year where the stakes couldn’t be higher, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to discuss the impact and effect of social media, particularly YouTube. Social media is in the spotlight for contributing to misinformation and radicalization, and yet the largest platform of them all, YouTube, gets a free pass. The film’s producer, Gale Anne Hurd (Trusteeship (IWF Southern California member), and victims’ rights attorney, Carrie Goldberg, answered questions and educated us about the real impact of social media and the threat of disinformation. We were fortunate to have Monika Bauerlein, CEO of Mother Jones Magazine, who moderated the panel.

23 Forums joined us in 17 states and 7 countries: Australia, The Bahamas, Canada, France, Panama, The USA, and The UK.

Special thanks to Gale Anne Hurd for reaching out and making this happen.

If you could not join us, I highly encourage you to watch the video of the programs; you won’t be disappointed. You can access them below or on our website.

This evening, we have a special behind-the-scenes tour hosted by our member, Lori Bettison-Varga, President and Director of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. Step into a dazzling array of magnificent gemstones in NHM’s Hixon Gem Vault. This exhibit is at the NHM for a limited time (only until April 21), so this after-hours private tour is extraordinary. There are a few spots left if you are able to join us, please contact the office (626-360-0676) or register on the Trusteeship website.

We are so fortunate to have such a preeminent and diverse membership. We encourage anyone with an idea for a panel or behind-the-scenes program to please get in touch with Karen Caplan, our program committee chairperson.

The Membership Committee invites nominations for incredible women in Southern California to become members of The Trusteeship /IWF Southern California. The deadline for nominating is April 30, 2024. If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with Jennifer Ferro or Aradhna Oliphant, Membership co-chairs.

Membership Instructions and nomination forms can be accessed here: https://thetrusteeship.org/membership-nomination/

I wish you all a wonderful month!

Thank you Trusteeship member Beth Morrison for this special invitation.

First performed in 2021, composer Huang Ruo’s compelling new adaptation of these tales comes to BroadStage as LA Opera’s 12th collaboration with the groundbreaking Beth Morrison Projects. Huang Ruo and puppeteer Basil Twist reinterpret Chinese creation myths for the 21st century. A fantastical world of sunbirds, demons and hairy giants is evoked in Book of Mountains & Sea, a fascinating work of vocal theater for 12 singers, two percussionists and six puppet masters.

Although this production is completely sold out, Beth was able to secure 10 tickets for our members, based on a first come first serve basis. A hosted reception before the performance will be provided by Beth.

The YouTube Effect: A Virtual Program

2024 is an election year, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Social media is in the spotlight for contributing to misinformation and radicalization, and yet the largest platform of them all, YouTube, gets a free pass. Many times larger than all of the other platforms combined, YouTube has 3 million channels with 1 billion hours of content viewed daily. Should we be worried about YouTube’s impact on the world as the global village square?

The Trusteeship (IWF Southern California) had the pleasure of hosting a panel discussion on April 4 answering that very question. Participating in our panel were the film’s producer Gale Anne Hurd, victims rights attorney Carrie Goldberg, and Monika Bauerlein, CEO of Mother Jones Magazine.

Dine Arounds

Hello Trusteeship sisters:

Have you ever attended a Trusteeship Dine Around? Isn’t it nice to be in a small group, close to where you live or work and get to know other members on a more personal level?

Dine arounds are one of our long time traditions and we are now setting up monthly dine arounds for 2024 to happen in all our geographies from February through November. We’re looking for someone to host in the month’s of April and May, would you like to host?

Please let us know if you want to host and how many people can be seated around your dining room table. We have a budget to reimburse for each dine around with a suggested maximum of 8 people. It can be dinner, lunch, brunch, during the week or on the weekend. It’s up to you. And you get to pick the theme for this dine around, which ensures fun and interesting conversations.

Once you indicate your interest, we will get back to you to confirm date, headcount, etc.
