The Trusteeship

February 2024

Hello Trusteeship Sisters!

February ushers in the Chinese New Year, the year of the Dragon; it is predicted to be full of opportunity, career, work, and success. Dragons are associated with strength, good fortune, and success. We wish this for all our IWF/Trusteeship sisters.

Last month, we announced the new Committee Chairs. The Committees have been working hard to develop the 2024/2025 initiatives to support our members.

To reiterate, the initiatives are to:

1. Foster a vibrant community of preeminent, accomplished, and diverse women leaders. Led by Jennifer Ferro and Aradhna Oliphant and the Membership Committee:

  • This year, membership nominations will happen in April. We’re building a wish list of recommendations now, and we’d love your suggestions. We are looking for women under 55 from diverse sectors and backgrounds. Please see the notice below and add to the pipeline of potential new members.

2. Support the continued success of our members personally and professionally. Lead by Karen Caplan and the Programs Committee:

  • The Committee has been hard at work assembling this year’s exciting calendar of events. Please see some of the upcoming programs and IWF conferences below.

3. Inspire and champion the current membership and those to come. Led by Devorah Lieberman and Julie Miller-Phipps and the Impact Committee:

  • This new committee is organizing and working toward “raising the profile of the IWF/Trusteeship.” They will be the conduit to IWF Global for our participation in the Fellows Program.

We have a great registration turnout for the IWF 50th Anniversary Conference in NYC. 29 Trusteeship members are currently registered, with a few on the waitlist. The conference is sold out. We look forward to spending time together in May.

Don’t forget to register for the New Members virtual gathering next Wednesday, February 21, from 5:30 to 6:30. You will have the opportunity to meet the seven new members and transfers and welcome them to The Trusteeship.

February 13 was “Galentine’s Day,” an unofficial but festive tribute to celebrating and cherishing the bonds of female friendship – I loved this quote from Jane Fonda in celebration of the day.

” Women’s friendships are like a renewable source of Power.”

I wish you all a Happy “Galentine’s Day.”

Linda

Susan Rose

Article except from The Santa Barbara Independent’s 37th Annual Celebration of Our Nicest Neighbors

It was over a series of dinners in 1987 that a group of Santa Barbara women decided it was time, once and for all, to take a seat at the table. Not for another meal, but at the table of power — of elected office — where they were woefully underrepresented. “Otherwise,” said Susan Rose, “we knew we were likely to end up on the menu.”

They formed the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee and the very next election helped two women win seats on the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors for the first time. “You really need to fight for what you believe in,” Susan said. “You need to stand up and stand out.” Susan herself went on to serve two terms as supervisor, and over the last three decades, she has devoted her unmatched grit and energy to championing the advancement of women, as well as civil rights, affordable housing, family services, environmental protections, and other progressive causes.

While in office, Susan led the effort to save 200 acres of land known today as the San Marcos Preserve and initiated the Safe Parking Program for homeless people living in their cars, a highly successful model that has been replicated across the country. She has served on countless local boards and committees — Planned Parenthood, Anti-Defamation League, Human Rights Watch Council, Antioch University, etc. — but it’s her current work with Emerge California, a statewide political leadership-training program for women, that now occupies most of her time.

Susan is in the process of passing the torch to the next generation of female leaders, even if she’s not ready to completely give it up yet. “I’m sharing it,” she said. She’s mentoring individual candidates and organizing networking events, like the one earlier this month that sold out almost overnight.

“I think we live in a feminist community, and I’m very proud of that,” Susan said. “But I always tell women, ‘I’m going to be watching what you do when you’re in office. Use your vote — your power — to create solutions and make change.’ Because we still have a lot of work to do.”

“Imagine an enriching experience and rare opportunity to meet, learn from, and share time with a college president, a top TV or movie producer, an artist, an author, a politician, a business or philanthropic leader, to name a few. That’s the magic of The Trusteeship. Friendships and support when life has dealt you a setback are added — precious gifts.”
