Wendy Garen
Wendy was unanimously elected to Chair the Los Angeles County Commission for Children and Families. Wendy was appointed to the Commission in 2015 by Supervisor Hilda Solis. She will lead a Commission of 15 during her term as Chair. The Commission advises the Board of Supervisors on strengthening service delivery systems and enhancing partnerships to create safer and more secure futures for Los Angeles County’s at-risk children and their families.
Marcia Hobbs
“My only news is that I am almost settled in to my new home in Palm Springs – all but one room organized – and that room had over 2,000 books that need to be sorted out – hard to walk through as it is meant to be my office but hope to sort it all out by November!”

Abbe Land
Abbe delivered the closing keynote for Los Angeles County Parks & Recreation Department’s annual girls’ empowerment conference Girls with Dreams Become Women with Visions, a month-long conference with over 1,000 girls 11-18 participating. The keynote took place on Saturday, October 31 and highlighted Abbe’s journey to her job with the Los Angeles County Women & Girls Initiative, as well as the importance of the 19th Amendment, voting and how girls can make a difference.
Ilyanne Morden Kichaven and Stacy Phillips
Ilyanne and Stacy have been nominated for the Los Angeles Business Journal’s Women’s Leadership Award 2020. Congratulations Ladies.

Ilyanne Morden Kichaven

Stacy Phillips

Ilse Metchek
Ilse wrote an article for Apparel News regarding where fashion trends are going. “We have watched the gradual decline of brand loyalty, a development borne of fast-fashion’s demand for new products all the time and the rise of influencer peddling. This reality has posed real threats to established brands that are not as agile due to legacy assets and their own bureaucracies.”
Julie Miller-Phipps
California State University Fullerton’s Center for Leadership recognized Julie Miller-Phipps in the category of Growth at their 9th Annual Leadership Awards. Every year, top business leaders and companies receive recognition for their excellent leadership practices at this prestigious yearly event.
On behalf of Kaiser Permanente, Julie accepted the Corporate Award from YWCA’s Pasadena/Foothill Valley Chapter at its annual Racial Justice Breakfast. The award was given for Kaiser Permanente’s “long term unwavering continued support.” The YWCA works toward racial justice and gender equality every day, and its annual event is an opportunity to recognize the commitment and dedication of its members, community advocates and business partners.

Rachel Moore
In early October, Rachel Moore announced a $25 million gift from Tina and Jerry Moss to The Music Center to support free and low-cost programming on its new plaza. The funds will support a free annual summer concert with a headline entertainer, a state-of-the art sound system for the plaza and The Music Center is formally launching a new Partner Network Initiative whereby The Music Center will co-design programs with community partners who share The Music Center’s conviction that the arts can heal and transform lives. The goal of this new program is to uplift LA artists, with an emphasis on Black, Indigenous and People of Color, making sure these organizations and artists have more opportunities to present their work at The Music Center and in neighborhoods across LA County. The Moss gift is the largest gift for programming that The Music Center has ever received.
Caroline Nahas
Caroline has been appointed Chairman of the UCLA Anderson Board of Advisors effective October 2020. Caroline is a long-time member of our Board of Advisors. Congratulations Caroline.

Yolanda Nava
Yolanda’s new book, Through the Dark, a compelling story of how this woman overcame sudden blindness and escaped a fatal disease that almost claimed my life and came to thrive, will be published March 3, 2021, just in time for Women’s History Month.
Yolanda also spoke virtually at three conferences in October: “Building a Better World Tomorrow Now” for Peace Pentagon; the Center for Spiritual Living Palm Desert, and on Thursday, October 29, was an opening keynote speaker for the National Latina Business Women Association Inland Empire’s Latina BizCon.
Yolanda’s keynote speech can be viewed on Vimeo using the link below. Her speech begins at the 34-minute mark.
Laurie Schalow
Laurie was named PR Week’s “Most Purposeful In-House Communicator” during its Purpose Awards, which recognizes activations that use creative ideas to further positive causes and also to acknowledge the organizations and individuals behind them. Aside from generating significant publicity for Chipotle’s purpose, Laurie’s work was praised for helping to transform the brand narrative.

Lynn Schenk
Lynn co-wrote an op-ed piece for the Times of San Diego regarding Former Vice President Joe Biden and their time working together in the House of Representatives in 1992.
Lynn was reappointed in August by Governor Newsom to the California High-Speed Rail Authority Board of Directors, where she has served since 2004.
Renata Simril
Renata is proud to announce that she has been elected to serve as an independent director for Steel Connect. Steel Connect Executive Chairman and Interim CEO Warren Lichtenstein says “Renata’s skills and experience are well suited to drive value creation. We are confident she will provide valuable perspectives and ensure sound corporate governance as we continue to drive profitability and long-term value for all our stakeholders.”

Roxana Velasquez
Roxana is receiving a Visionary Leadership Award from LEAD San Diego/San Diego Chamber of Commerce. It is for the following:
Congratulations on receiving the Charles Nathanson Memorial Award for Cross-Border Region Building at LEAD San Diego’s 18th Annual Visionary Awards! This award recognizes visionary leadership by addressing and demonstrating joint solutions to cross-border issues and further uniting San Diego and Baja California for a common future.
Roxana was also featured in an article by the San Diego Union Tribune regarding all of her accomplishments during her 10 years of leadership at the San Diego Museum of Art despite financial crisis then and now.

Rachael Worby
Rachael, Artistic Director of performing arts nonprofit MUSE/IQUE, was featured on CBS “Sunday Morning” Matinee. MUSE/IQUE’s performance of the poignant spiritual “Balm in Gilead” has surpassed 50,000 views across social media.

IWF Silent Auction
Thank you, Trusteeship Sisters Frances Arnold and Grace Evans Cherashore, for donating items to the IWF Silent Auction held in October.
Frances’ donation of a one hour-long Zoom conversation between herself and the winner was so popular that Frances agreed to offer her time to the TWO top bidders, topics and time to be arranged. Grace donated a two-night stay for 2 people at The Lodge at Torrey Pines with dinner for two in its signature restaurant. These donations combined raised $10,300 for the IWF Foundation! Thank you ladies for your generous donations.
