The Trusteeship

September 2023

Greetings Trusteeship,

As summer comes to a close, it’s hard to believe that we are transitioning to autumn. Our virtual and in-person meetings over the summer have been a pleasure, and we are grateful for these opportunities to connect. We had a great time at two panels, Generative AI and What’s the Strike All About, which stimulated informative and lively conversations. We also enjoyed a Trusteeship Coffee with Mayor Karen Bass, which was an extraordinary evening at Colleen Bell’s beautiful home. Additionally, we had quality time at Dine Arounds with Claudia Kotchka & Alison Kinney Paul, Julie Miller-Phipps & Karen Caplan, and Aradhna Oliphant & Julie Coker.

We warmly welcome our new members: Janet Garufis, Laurie Leshin, Jackie Park, and Graciela Carrasco Montgomery.

We have an outstanding lineup for the rest of the autumn season, and the details of the October events are listed below.

We warmly welcome Aradhna Oliphant as our newest board member and incoming Membership Chair. Aradhna will transition this fall with Jennifer Ferro as Jennifer steps fully into the Vice President’s role.

We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Pat Rosengren, the founder and leader of Huntington Association Management & Marketing (HAMM), our management company since October 2019. Pat was a trusted leader of the organization.

Lastly, Pat’s passing is a stark reminder of our mortality, so hug those dear to you and know that you are all cherished.

With appreciation and gratitude for you all,

Billie Greer

Billie Greer has been elected Chair of the Exposition Park & California Science Center Board of Directors for the 2023-24 year. Appointed by the Governor, the nine-members board supports the office of Exposition Park management and the California Science Center by providing policy direction and guidance. Billie has served on the board for several years, having been appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger; reappointed twice by Governor Brown; and is presently serving at the pleasure of Governor Newsom. Amazing things are happening in the park. The Science Center is starting the complex process required to display the Endeavor space craft vertically – in launch position.

The Coliseum is celebrating its 100th year in the park. The Natural History Museum will soon be opening a new wing. The California African American Museum has been undergoing renovation and is about to reopen. LAFC and Angel City are exciting soccer fans at the Bank of Montreal soccer stadium. Lots of activities for kids and seniors are happening at the Expo Center. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is under construction with an opening date sometime in 2025. And, the park is looking ahead in anticipation of the 2026 World Cup matches and the 2028 summer Olympic games.

Yolanda Nava

The Conference theme Is a response to our challenging times: Defending freedom and human rights, a call to conscience.

Kristin Sakoda

A message from Kristin

Los Angeles is the cultural capital of the world. And the arts have been proven to support individual, community, and regional health, wellbeing, economic prosperity, and human development. Yet our arts, culture, and creative ecosystem requires feeding and tending to ensure the artists, organizations, museums, cultural centers, theatres, film and literary arts, and youth arts education can not only survive but thrive — especially as we continue to see challenges for performing arts coming out of the pandemic, and labor strife in the film and screen industries for actors, performers, writers, artists, and others.

To meet this moment, in my role as Director of the LA County Department of Arts and Culture, I led a team to leverage public sector funding and program design that resulted in a historic and unprecedented investment of over $31 million in grants awarded to over 750 nonprofit arts and equity-building organizations in Los Angeles County. There has never been a public sector arts investment of this scale in terms of both funding and number of arts organizations and reach, in the history of the LA region.

The majority of the funding is through Creative Recovery LA, a one-time recovery initiative utilizing funds from President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, allocated by the honorable (and all female) LA County Board of Supervisors to the Department to design a program to support recovery of the arts organizations that in turn ensure the recovery of our communities, with priority for communities hardest hit by COVID and inequity.

All told, the LA County Department of Arts and Culture is on track to deliver approximately $40 million in relief and recovery grant funding to ensure and culture in Los Angeles County, with an additional nearly $40 million in grants to the arts sector as a steering committee member in the public-private LA Arts Recovery Fund with private philanthropy partners.
